US M6 Bradley Linebacker SAM vehicle. Following the repeated failure of US Army air defense systems like Mauler, US Roland and DIVADS and the many problems of the stopgap solutions like Chaparral and M163 VADS (temporary solutions that remained in service for decades) the US Army decided on another interim solution: refitting M2A2 ODS Bradleys for the air defense role. The two cell TOW launcher was replaced with a four cell FIM-92 Stinger launcher, datalink to the air defense radar network, modifications to the fire control system and internal stowage to accommodate Stinger. Linebacker entered service in the late 90s, with about 100 vehicles converted. In 2005 and 06 all Linebackers were converted back to IFVs, as it was assumed that all future wars would resemble the counter-insurgency missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and there would be no threat from hostile air assets.
