British Challenger 1 MBT 1-100
British FV4030/4 Challenger main battle tank with L11A5 120mm rifle and 2 L7 7.62mm machine guns. Originally designed to replace the Shah of Iran's fleet of aging Chieftains, Challenger was adopted by the British Army due to three circumstances. The British MBT-80 project was not going to be ready for production any time soon, the Shah no longer needed tanks, or anything else, from Britain, and with the loss of the Iranian order the Royal Ordnance tank factories were expected to be idle for several years resulting in a terminal loss of skilled workforce. Accordingly MBT-80 was cancelled and Challenger adopted in 1983. Despite a famously embarrassing performance in the 1987 Canadian Army Trophy competition and concerns ranging from insufficient armor, a design optimized for Western Europe and low readiness rates due to a lack of parts going in to the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Challenger proved a highly effective tank in combat against Iraq.
Available in the 1980s configuration and the 1991 and later combat fit. Each tank comes with one open and one closed cupola as well as 2 machine guns.
