US M103 heavy tank with M58/L60 rifle, M2 .50 calibre heavy machine gun and 2 M1919A4E1 7.62mm coaxial machine guns. Beginning in 1951, 300 tanks were built as the T43E1 and promptly put in storage as unsatisfactory. A series of 98 upgrades to 80 tanks resulted in the M103, which entered US army service in 1956 as a long range tank killer much like the British Conqueror, which used the same gun. The remaining tanks received nearly 300 changes, including a new gunner's periscopic sight, fire control system, and considerable automotive improvements.
Unfortunately the base M103 was slow at only 21 mph, unreliable, short ranged (only 80 miles) and carried only 34 rounds for the main gun, leading to concerns that M103s would wind up like Tigers, being abandoned in retreats after breaking down or running out of fuel. The USMC adopted its M103A1s and later refitted A2s as infantry support tanks, fielding one company in each tank battalion. The improved tanks were found to be satisfactory, particularly after the A2 switched the gas engine for a diesel that nearly quadrupled the tank's range and slightly increased road speed. Withdrawn from US Army service in the early 1960s but retained by the Marines until 1974. All three versions are available.
